On the morning of September 20, 2014, Tammy Kingery (built-in April 13, 1977), a nurse in Due south Carolina, chosen her husband Park from work and asked him to have her home equally she was non feeling well. He did, and later on went to run some errands with his two sons. When they returned, the house was locked and Tammy was not there. A note inside the house, evidently left by Tammy, said she was going for a walk and would be back soon, but she never returned and has not been seen since.[1] [2] [3]

Tammy'due south family said information technology would have been unusual for her to get out a notation, or walk in the wood near their Northward Augusta home. In the house, she had left her purse, phone, and keys, which would have been needed to lock the door. An extensive search of the surface area around the house turned up no sign of her.[4]

Investigation by local constabulary revealed that she had been exchanging texts with two men in the area, merely law do non believe that is related to her disappearance. She had suffered depression.[ii] The case has been the subject of an episode of the Investigation Discovery series Disappeared.[5]

Groundwork [edit]

Kingery, a native of Northwest Indiana, met her husband Park Kingery there in the mid-1990s when the 2 worked together at a local drugstore.[6] On September twenty, 1994, the 2 were engaged. Subsequently their wedlock, the couple had three children and settled down in a house they built in a wooded surface area of Edgefield Canton, South Carolina, only north of N Augusta,[seven] near where Park Kingery had gotten a job as a welder. After finishing a caste in nursing in 2001, Tammy took a job equally a nurse in a local branch of the NHC Healthcare nursing dwelling house.[viii] She was still working there in September 2014.[6]

Her marriage to Kingery was strained.[9] While her father, who even so lived in Indiana, says he was not aware of whatever marital or psychological bug his girl may take had at that time,[10] her mother says the couple had grown distant from each other since their youngest son was born and had considered divorce.[9] Tammy had an ongoing struggle with depression for which she took medication; it had led to extramarital diplomacy and attempts to accept her own life.[2] [eleven]

During the start weeks of September, Tammy seemed to be suffering physically—according to Park she had missed a few days of piece of work, which was unlike her. She oftentimes went to bed shortly after returning from piece of work. Park says Tammy believed no treatment would work.[11] In the middle of that calendar month, effectually September 16, Tammy began having problem sleeping. 1 dark she woke up sweating so severely she had to alter her dress. She confided this to her 2 sisters, with whom she spoke regularly. They advised her to make an appointment to run across the doctor, which she did, for September 21.[12]

Disappearance [edit]

On the morning of September 20, 2014, Tammy went to work her shift starting at 7 a.thousand. Her coworkers there say she was agitated about something, uncharacteristically raising her voice in chat, and checked her own blood pressure 4 times, finding it high. They urged her to calm down every bit her agitation was keeping her centre rate high.[12]

Not as well long after arriving, she chosen Park to say she was feeling a little featherbrained and wanted to come home.[x] Since she did not feel up to driving, he picked her upwardly, leaving her car at work, and brought her home, where she changed into her pajamas and lay downward to take a nap. Around 10 a.m., he left with the couple's two sons to do some errands and requite his wife the chance to rest.[xiii] [14] Their daughter was still at the house of a friend with whom she had spent the preceding night.[7]

Park dropped the older son off at his mother'due south house and then the boy could mow the lawn. He took the younger male child with him on his errands, visiting several stores where the ii were seen past security cameras.[13] When he returned to the business firm, the canis familiaris was outside and the door was locked. Inside they found a note from Tammy reading: "Gone for a walk. Be back before long. Dearest you."[7] Tammy was initially reported to have taken a Hard Rock Café backpack with her,[15] merely that was later corrected as the haversack had been sold a calendar week earlier at a yard sale.[16] Her purse, wallet, cell phone, and keys were however inside the house.[17]

When he saw the annotation, Kingery believed correct away that something was wrong.[thirteen] His first thought was that she had attempted to walk dorsum to her job in order to retrieve her car. He left his sons at home and drove the route she would have taken merely did not detect her. He called his girl and told her to get into a car with her friend and expect for her female parent; he called his mother-in-police, who came to the house correct abroad. At the domicile he and his son chosen and searched for Tammy in the thick surrounding forest. At 2 p.m. they chosen the police.[18]

Searches and investigation [edit]

Deputies from the Edgefield Canton Sheriff's Part responded. They, too, attempted to locate Tammy nearby just could not. And so they searched the firm for any signs that a crime might accept been committed; there was nothing unusual. Search dogs were given the nursing scrubs Tammy had worn to her job that morning time but did not discover a trail anywhere.[19]

The search was chop-chop expanded to employ a South Carolina Constabulary Enforcement Division helicopter and more deputies fanned out over a larger area around the Kingery business firm. They too searched a hiking trail near Interstate 20 where Tammy had oftentimes gone in the by. A notice put out for her drew reports of sightings in the Central Savannah River Surface area of South Carolina and Georgia around North Augusta, one of a white female person walking along the interstate in Columbia County, Georgia, 30 miles (48 km) to the westward. Simply by nighttime, neither Tammy nor any clues to her whereabouts had been found.[20]

Park, who had personally traveled as far as Atlanta looking for his wife,[8] organized a volunteer search for her a week afterward her disappearance, simply over again the woods within 10 miles (xvi km) of the business firm yielded null. Family and friends produced fliers and distributed them around the expanse, relying on truck drivers they knew to carry them farther away. They also ready a Facebook page.[21]

Deep in the woods near the house, the volunteer searchers caught the scent of something that they idea was a corpse. They followed it to an abandoned wooden shack, in an expanse thick with briars. Inside they institute sponges, gloves, and a plastic bag containing a dead dog, the source of the stench. While many of them believe the shed may have some connection to Tammy'south disappearance, the sheriff's role had checked information technology on their original search and argue that it does non.[22]

Nonetheless, some of the volunteers were non and so hands convinced. "Someone went to a lot of trouble to put that dead canis familiaris there," said one family unit friend. Even if it did have aught to do with Tammy's disappearance, he said, it showed that at that place were potentially unsafe people in the vicinity of the Kingerys' house.[22] Further attempts to search in the woods were curtailed when South Carolina'southward deer season began shortly afterwards, making the woods unsafe.[fourteen] [16]

Initially, police had kept details of Tammy's low out of their public statements on the example. They believed that just describing her equally "endangered" without saying why might help them filter out 18-carat tips from hoax calls and mistaken identity. But by belatedly September, Park had fabricated that information public, apparently hoping that people would recognize the urgency of her condition and find her.[23]

Police looked at Tammy's phone to see if anything there might aid constitute what she did or intended to do that day. They institute two sets of text messages with other men, which they described as "romantic" in nature, that Tammy had apparently deleted prior to her disappearance. All the same, they investigated the two men and do non believe they had any involvement in her disappearance.[14]

Tammy shared her husband's family's enthusiasm for motorcycles, and two tips investigators received suggest 1 might have been involved in her disappearance. Her daughter claims to have seen her mother equally the rider on a motorcycle that passed the car she was in with her friend while they were near the family home (but were unable to locate when they turned around; later attempts by law to discover it or show of its presence anywhere were also unsuccessful). A neighbor also recalls hearing a vehicle with a loud engine, mayhap a motorcycle, go out the Kingerys' driveway shortly after Kingery left with his sons after seeing his wife for what has turned out to exist the terminal time.[24]

Questions [edit]

The circumstances of Tammy's disappearance proved particularly puzzling to her family unit and friends. It was very much unlike her, they told reporters, to go for walks in the woods around the business firm; even on the roads, as the Kingerys' neighborhood of houses on large lots was not pedestrian-friendly, and when she did do something like that she normally collection to boondocks where better areas for walking existed. They as well found it unusual that she left a note, every bit she virtually always kept in affect with her family, friends, and coworkers via text messages.[10] The notation's concluding "Love you" as well seemed to them more similar something someone might say if they were expecting to exist away for weeks rather than hours.[x] It was speculated that information technology might non have been written by her, but several months after her disappearance the Country Law Enforcement Division confirmed that it was.[14]

Another question turned on the house beingness locked when Kingery and his son returned. The house's main door could be locked but from the outside, with the key. Yet Tammy's keys, including the house key, were inside along with her purse, wallet, and telephone, items she might have been expected to take if she were planning a longer absence.[10] [25]

Theories and aftermath [edit]

A few weeks later on Tammy's disappearance, constabulary officially stated that they believed there were "suspicious circumstances" in the instance. Her family unit besides believes that something unpleasant befell her. The question they and constabulary have is what that was.[ten]

"Unfortunately she developed a depression, and I think that'southward what led to her leaving", Kingery said to local Idiot box station WRDW-TV a year after. He said Tammy would sometimes tell him she "needed to get away".[seven] According to one account she had attempted suicide two weeks before her disappearance, and it has been suggested that the disappearance was some other suicide effort that would have left her body undiscoverable.[6]

Alternatively, given the possibility that someone else may have been involved, Tammy may have been abducted or killed. "I've e'er thought perchance someone just got in the house and took her", Kingery said, recalling how many of her personal items were left behind. The family unit has asked police to search bodies of water in the expanse they may accept bypassed before.[7] The chief investigator on the instance for the sheriff's section said in 2022 that a body would have floated to the surface by and then.[26]

Afterward the initial searches, police force decided to thoroughly investigate Park Kingery again. His business relationship of his actions and whereabouts on the morning Tammy disappeared was corroborated both by independent interviews with his sons, jail cell phone pings and security camera footage from the stores he and the younger son had visited.[14] He also took a lie detector exam, which he told Tammy's female parent made him nervous. Afterwards initially telling the Curious Times podcast almost a year after Tammy's disappearance that the police told him some of the results were "questionable", he told the Investigation Discovery channel'south Disappeared serial in 2022 that police had asked him non to talk nigh it.[27]

Unlike other missing persons cases, at that place is currently no reward available for information leading to the resolution of the example. Kingery says he had to spend the $4,000 he put upwardly to pay bills with his wife's income gone. "I wish I could accept put out more but it's gone; that was my money out of my retirement fund".[7] He afterwards had to file for bankruptcy and might have to sell the business firm and movement in with his parents.[28]
